Durban: A major setback for developing countries like India at the UN Climate meet in Durban. India gave in on its tough position at the climate change conference in Durban, agreed with China to a treaty on emission cuts at a future date.
The deal, which was sealed after a 36-hour delay puts all countries under a legal agreement to control greenhouse gases- something India and China had been opposing. Currently only industrial countries are legally bound by emission targets.
India's delegation led by Environment Minister Jayanthi Natarajan gave in after China agreed to the draft and it was isolated. On a positive note, the Kyoto Protocol has been extended by 5 years and all major emitters will be forced to act against global warming.
"Of course, as you know, we were not happy with reopening the text but in a spirit of flexibility and accommodation shown by all we have shown our flexibility and we have agreed to this, the words that you have just mentioned. And we agreed to adopt it," Jayanthi said.
