The High Court has directed the government and the police to ensure that Dalits leader Immanuel Sekaran’s commemorative celebrations are conducted peacefully on September 11.
The first bench comprising Chief Justice MY Eqbal and Justice TS Sivagnanam gave the direction on Thursday while disposing of a public interest writ petition from advocate P Pugalenthi.
Petitioner prayed for a direction to the authorities concerned to transfer Rajesh Das, IGP at Madurai, Sandheep Mittal, DyIGP, Maheshwar Kaliraj, SP, both at Ramnad and P Sivakumar, inspector attached to Paramakudi town police station, as they had resorted to firing, in which six persons had died during the celebrations on September 11, last year. In its counter, the police submitted that DyIGP Sandheep Mittal and inspector Sivakumar had already been transferred. Rajesh Das and Kaliraj were not field officers.
Noting this, the bench said that the apprehension of the petitioner was not justified. Recording the undertaking of police in its counter-affidait to the effect that elaborate arrangements had been made, the bench said that it should be strictly adhered to.
