The City Police team investigating the murder of Saji, an accomplice of rowdy-sheeter Choozhattukotta Ambily, has widened its investigation to neighbouring states after getting information that the suspected attackers, including Soju alias Ajith Kumar alias ‘Ammakkoru Makan’, have slipped to their safe havens in Tamil Nadu or Karnataka.
The investigation team has been split into three, and one team has gone to the neighbouring states in search of the accused who have been identified by the police.
Fort Assistant Commissioner M Radhakrishnan Nair said that all the five attackers have been identified and they would be arrested soon. “The identity of the attackers has been revealed. Since they have safe havens in other states, including Tamil Nadu, an investigation team has been sent there,” he said.
The inter-state hideouts of the criminals were unearthed during the investigation into the Robin Das and Kannadi Shaji murders. The friends of the assailants residing in Coimbatore and Bangalore had provided shelter to them during the investigations. It is in this context that the police are looking for the other-state connections of the murderers.
The police also confirmed that the murder was part of a larger conspiracy and the ‘hit’ was directly ordered and implemented by Soju, who was waiting for a chance to settle scores with Ambily.
Soju and Ambily have been at loggerheads and this rivalry intensified after the former was nabbed by the Fort police and detained under the Goonda Act. Soju strongly believed that it was Ambily or his gang members who had passed on the information of Soju’s arrival in the locality to the police. Since then, Soju has been waiting for revenge.
Meanwhile, the Police Department has expressed concern over the leniency shown by the review committee in releasing the goons detained under the Goonda Act. The top-level officers said that letting off the hardcore criminals gives them a chance to mix with their gangs and revive criminal activities.
