New Delhi: In a few days, women could hopefully do away with pepper spray and pocket knife with the government now working on an SOS watch. The wristwatch would enable women to send out a distress signal along with location details at the push of a button.
"The watch will dial the fed numbers. Then the GPS system will start working and videography and so on. If all this can happen in the form of a wrist watch in Rs 500, it'll be a technological breakthrough," Union Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal said.
This comes amidst rising concern on women safety in India. In the wake of the brutal Delhi gangrape on December 16, 2012 that shocked the nation and exposed the flimsy security measures for the women in the country, authorities have taken other initiatives like pink autorickshaws too to tighten the safety situation.
The autos in Gurgaon, which are meant exclusively for women, were reintroduced by the police on Friday. Twenty two autos have been registered for the initial run and would be available from MG Road Metro station. These autos will be equipped with special features like a panic button and a GPS system.
These measures come after the government faced protests throughout the country demanding safety measures for women.
