Lucknow: The iconic Mughal Sarai railway station was officially renamed as the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Junction on Monday, a year after the Centre approved the UP government’s proposal regarding the same.
The Uttar Pradesh government informed the Governor in an official communication about the change made according to the Centre's nod in 2017.
The proposal was given by the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh in 2017, in a bid to revive the legacy of Upadhyay, who was found dead in 1968 at this junction itself.
Upadhyay's body was found under mysterious circumstances on a platform of Mughalsarai in 1968.
The move led to a major upheaval in Parliament after several MPs, including Samajwadi Party's Naresh Agarwal, protested against the Centre's decision to give the nod to renaming the junction after Upadhyay.
The opposition tore into the BJP government both at the Centre and in Uttar Pradesh saying the party could very well change the map of the country.
The Mughal Sarai Junction was set up by the British in the 1800s as a key station linking New Delhi to Kolkata.
The junction, the fourth busiest railway station in the country, is located on the main Howrah-Delhi Grand Chord line.
The Yogi Adityanath government had in June 2017 approved the proposal of renaming the station and forwarded it to the Ministry of Railways for final approval.
