THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Power-starved Kerala loses 400 MW of electricity daily, due to unscientific use of energy and non-upgradation of technology by entrepreneurs, government agencies and domestic users. It is estimated that 1.558 billion units (BU) of power is wasted in the state annually due to unscientific utilisation which comes to 12.8 per cent of the total consumption. Energy Management Centre (EMC) conducted a energy efficiency study at various government buildings including government treasuries and public sector units and it was found that the scope for energy conservation is to the tune of 15 to 30 per cent.A study conducted by National Productivity Council, New Delhi, for the Energy Management Centre-Kerala and Bureau of Energy Efficiency gives an eye-opening account of power utilisation in various sectors, said EMC director Dharesan Unnithan. According to the study, in Kerala, the annual electricity sale to domestic sector is 5.62418 BU which accounts for 46.3 per cent of the total electricity sold. The savings potential in rural segment by adopting CFLs and BEE-star rated products is 40-50 per cent. The savings potential in urban segment by adopting BEE star-rated products is 15-20 per cent. On the whole, the energy savings ,potential in the domestic sector is estimated to be 20-25 per cent, which works out to 1.13 BU per year. The annual sale of electricity to the commercial sector is 1.9 BU and accounts for 15.7 per cent of the total electricity sold. The commercial sector constitutes government and private establishments, hospitals, hotels, restaurants, educational institutions and malls. There are 45 commercial buildings in the state accounting for annual energy consumption of 506 MU which works out to about 26.4 per cent of the sectoral consumption. The annual energy savings potential for 45 commercial buildings is assessed to be 0.102 BU. Dharesan Unnithan said the industrial sector is yet to become aware that one unit.of energy saved will reflect in their profit.  The Union Government had made energy audit  mandatory for all industries to reduce the power consumption. It is planned to conduct the audit in 2000-odd industries in the state within three years.  EMC has prepared an energy audit manual, which is now being used by the industries to produce best results in saving energy. He pointed out that the Energy conservation Assemblage which is being held here on November 13 and 14 is aimed at creating awareness among the public.
