A couple from Baleswar, Odisha, named Gaurish and Sharmishtha Manigrahi have donated the liver and kidneys of their 19-month-old baby boy. According to Local 18 Odisha report, the organ transplant of this child took place at the Sam Hospital, Odisha. Both Gaurish and Sharmishtha are artists. This is believed to be the first incident from Odisha. The 19-month-old child was declared brain dead on Saturday (May 22), while undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit. His parents were heartbroken after knowing this, but then they decided to save the lives of other people with their child’s organs. Sharmishtha said that her child is not alive, but she had decided that other parents should not suffer the same fate as hers.

Respecting their wishes, the hospital authorities contacted the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation. A medical team from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhubaneswar, helped in extracting the kidney and liver from the baby’s body. Sam Hospital’s Medical Superintendent Professor Rachita Shadangi said, “For the first time in Odisha, I have seen organs removed from such a young child and sent for transplantation to save someone else’s life.”

The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation was also in contact with the Sam Hospital throughout this operation. The transplanted liver was eventually attached to a child’s body being treated at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences in Delhi via surgical procedure. Similarly, two kidneys have been transplanted to a child undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the capital. After the body of her son arrived at the village, he was accorded a guard of honour. As seen in the Local 18 byte, the Police officers saluted the deceased boy. The byte also shows the boy’s father trying to talk to the media in a choked voice with tears.
