The cleanliness drive which has been initiated in the city as part of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Kochi for Emerging Kerala 2012 is going on in full swing.
The Corporation, the Public Works Department and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) who are entrusted with the task have affirmed that they have left no stone unturned in giving the city a better look. The PWD and the Corporation will undertake the cleaning of those roads under them.
PWD (Roads) Chief Engineer P A Hashim said the work was advancing on a war footing. “The cleaning process in roads like Foreshore Road, Park Avenue Road and the roads leading from Venduruthy to Willingdon Island has been completed. Measures are on to fix reflectors in the median,” he said.
Hashim said that barricades were erected on those places where more crowd is expected. Besides the PWD has also completed the patch works.
The cleaning work of roads prior to Prime Minister’s visit is nearing completion. “There are three procedures in the cleaning drive - cleaning, patchwork and beautification,” said Soumini Jain, chairperson of Works Standing Committee, Corporation. Steps have been initiated to remove all the hoardings and flex boards. The paintings of the medians are also nearing completion,” she said.
NHAI project director, Kochi, C T Abraham said that there was not much patchwork to do in the national highway in connection with the Prime Minister’s visit.
“The major hurdle we had to encounter during the cleaning process was the waste that were strewn in various parts of the highway. It has been removed. Besides, bushes and grasses grown along the median were also cleared,” he said.
Though some tourist destinations were also cleaned, there was scant possibility for the delegates to visit tourist hot spots. The major reason being the tight schedule of the Prime Minister.
