Opposition parties walk out

The Congress and the JD(S) members in Legislative Council on Thursday staged a walk out in protest against the University of Agricultural Sciences and Certain other Law (Amendment) Bill 2012 which had empowered the government to set up Agricultural and horticultural University at Shimoga.

The opposition parties charged that the government was creating one more University  to serve political interests.

The Congress and the JD(S) members thumped the desk when the ruling BJP member Mumtaz Ali Khan described the government’s decision to create new university integrating both Agriculture and Horticulture as an act of ‘Tughlaq darbar’.

However, Agriculture Minister Umesh Katti  strongly defended the government’s action and said. “The decision to set up another Agriculture university was taken to strengthen the farm sector,” he said. The Minister informed the House that the state government would shortly integrate agriculture in the Horticulture University in Bhagalkot.

The House, however passed the bill in the absence of the Opposition members who had staged walk out.
