PM regrets death 'caused' by his security
Manmohan Singh writes letter to family of kidney patient.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has apologised to the family of a kidney patient who died outside a Chandigarh hospital because the security measures for the PM visit’s allegedly barred his entry to the hospital.

Singh, in a letter to the wife of the dead man, expressed his “profound sadness” and “regret”. Singh said in the letter he has asked security agencies to care for the common man’s “sensitivities.”

IANS reports Sumit Prakash Verma, 32, who was suffering from renal failure and other complications, died on Tuesday outside the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) because security measures allegedly delayed him from reaching the emergency wing.

Verma, who was brought here from Ambala, 45 km away, is survived by his wife and two minor children. The Prime Minister’s Office on Tuesday sought a report from the authorities on Verma’s death and Singh on Wednesday wrote a letter to his wife.

"Dear Smt. Verma, I express a profound sense of sadness . I understand your husband could not reach the hospital because of my visit . I regret it deeply,” Singh said in the letter.

“I have issued a detailed notice to the security agencies to be sensitive to the concerns of common man," he said.
