Police hospitalise IAC member

Police on Thursday forcibly shifted Nadir Shah Naqvi, member of the India Against Corruption, Hyderabad chapter who had been on a fast unto death for the last eight days, to the Gandhi Hospital on the advice of doctors. The police move effectively ended the protest which began at the Indira Park on July 26 in support of social activist Anna Hazare and his team.

Though there was hardly anybody at the venue, the police had to use force to shift Naqvi as the IAC members resisted his hospitalisation. “This is not the right way to behave. It is our democratic right to protest and we have not violated any rules so far,” said an angry Shashank Rajwar, member of IAC. Other members alleged that not even a sugar test was conducted by the doctor to assess Naqvi’s health.

Shaik Nagul Meera, sub-inspector at the Gandhinagar police station, said they were simply following the doctor’s advice. “We received orders to shift him on the advice of the doctor who conducted the medical test, and we were only doing our duty. We did not disturb them in the last eight days. In fact, the members themselves quit due to their failing health,” he explained.

Originally seven members of the IAC sat on hunger strike at the Indira Park to support Team Anna’s demand for drafting of a Jan Lokpal Bill. However, from the fourth day onwards, one by one had to break the fast due to failing health.
