TIRUNELVELI: Union Minister of State V Narayanasamy, who was deputed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to dispel the fears of people living around the Koodankulam nuclear power plant regarding the project, was snubbed by the protestors as they refused to meet him at Radhapuram and continued with their indefinite fast at Idinthakarai on Tuesday. After waiting at the Government Circuit House, Narayanasamy, an MoS of the Prime Minister’s office, then went to the protest site, 10 km from Radhapuram. When a village assistant was sent to the protest venue to ask the demonstrators to go over to Radhapuram to meet the minister, they refused to budge and demanded that the minister come and visit them. When authorities raised concern regarding the minister’s safety, the protestors allayed the fears, assuring maximum protection.Keeping their word, only after Narayanasamy left the place did the protestors raise slogans demanding the closure of the plant which was scheduled to be commissioned in another few months. During their interaction with Narayanasamy, the protestors told him that the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) was a threat to the whole of south Tamil Nadu. “Our livelihoods would be lost if the plant comes into operation and our protests are not motivated by any political party,” they told him, pointing out that the lives of the people were more important than electricity.Narayanasamy assured the protestors he would convey their sentiments to the PM. Later, he told reporters he understood that the people’s protest against the plant was strong. “I’ll inform the PM and Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa,” he said.
