KOCHI: The project initiated almost ten years ago to supply water to the NGO Quarters under the Collector’s drought relief fund will soon get a fresh lease of life.District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth said the district administration would take over the abandoned wells at the earliest. The district administration will soon take up the issue, he said and added that the primary step is to check whether the water inside the wells is usable. “Measures will be taken to test the water in the well,” he said. Thrikkakara has been reeling under water shortage for quite a long time. There are times when people who are living close to the wells do not get sufficient water for their daily needs. The issue could have been resolved if the wells were properly maintained. The District Collector said measures would be taken to distribute the water to nearby areas, once the testing is done. “To speed up the distribution process, the district administration will utilise the services of agencies like the Kudumbasree. “The agencies can act as a supplementary element in speeding up the process of water distribution. Most of the wells are now lying abandoned. Though these wells were dug in 1978, they were to be renovated under the Collector’s Drought Relief Fund ten years ago. However, the authorities did not even take steps for their proper maintenance. One of the wells which is close to the primary health centre in Thrikkakara is being used to dump waste. The wells were covered with concrete slabs to maintain their cleanliness. “If the wells are cleaned up, it would be of immense help to over 200 families living nearby. It would also alleviate the water shortage experienced in Thrikkakara,” residents said.
