BANGALORE: “I am financially supporting my husband who has to pay loan of over Rs1 lakh which he had taken few years ago. He is auto driver and all my family members are going through a lot of hardships without a good monthly income. Being surrogate mother for single parents has proved to be blessing in disguise for us,” 28-year-old Pallavi (name changed) explained on asking why she preferred to become a surrogate mother for Charles from US and helped him by lending her womb to carry his child. Charles’ sperm and a donated egg have been used in the embryo which has been planted in her womb through IVF technique. This, Pallavi, the mother of two children, said was an easy way to earn money which she could not have earned in five years by working at garment factory. On being asked if she again wants to be a surrogate mother, she said she does not want to go through pain of caesarian surgery again after repaying the loan. During her pregnancy, she received `3,000 every month and after delivery she was entitled for `2 lakh.Pallavi’s is not the only case. There are many women who prefer to be surrogate mothers for childless couples. Poverty and financial crises have led many Indian women to go in for surrogacy. They go through all sorts of physical and mental trauma to assist some families. This trend of renting a womb is booming in the country. However, Benhur Samson, CEO surrogacy Abroad Inc, an international surrogacy agency based in Chicago said that not just India, other countries like Thailand, Ukraine and Argentina are also witnessing spurt in the demand for surrogacy mothers. “Demand for surrogate mothers has not only increased from the Indian couples but couples from UK and US are also looking forward to India. With one in six women in US have problems to conceive, the childless couples re looking forward to India as a niche for surrogate mother,” he added. “This baby boy was conceived and has become the first surrogate baby from the city going to the US in few days. A series of counselling with the surrogate mothers and single parents were provided before and after the delivery,” Dr Ramesh, CEO Dr Ramesh Hospital, said.
