The Syndicate meeting of the Kerala University witnessed stormy scenes on Thursday with the LDF members gheraoing the Vice- Chancellor for holding the meeting on a hartal day, backed by the CPM.

In the absence of VC and Pro-VC, the UDF members held the meeting by electing a member from the 10-member UDF camp.

The CPM has challenged the way the Syndicate meeting was chaired by a UDF member when VC was present at the venue.

The CPM has also raised questions about the legality of a number of appointments, which were approved in the Syndicate meeting.

According to sources, the LDF members gheraoed VC A Jayakrishnan at his office as he was getting ready to chair the Syndicate meeting. They also stopped Pro-VC J Prabhash, who was on his way to the Syndicate meeting hall and sent him back.

A UDF syndicate member said that according to the University rules, in the absence of VC and pro-VC, a member can be elected from the team (if there are nine members present from the majority side) to chair the meeting. The member said that the meeting deferred all agendas which required a policy decision to a special Syndicate meeting to be called later. Only other agendas were taken up which could be approved without the the presence of VC.

The UDF members said that the CPM members even tore away the pages from the attendance register when the meeting was on.

The UDF members elected Jolly Jacob to head Thursday’s Syndicate meeting and passed some agendas as the LDF kept away.

The meeting decided to launch the database portal of the research students in September. The researchers’ scholarships will be distributed through e-payment from November 1. The meeting decided to allot Rs 50 lakh for the water supply scheme in Kariavattom campus.

Amenity centre will be set up in the Palayam campus spending Rs 5 crore. The DC school of Management and Technology was given affiliation by the Syndicate.

The appointment of Suja Kurup and Vishnu Mohan (English), Dr Lal C A (Institute of Distance Education ), V N Manju (Mathematics), Sajinkumar (Geology) as Assistant Professors were approved.

The CPM syndicate members have however challenged this move saying it is the VC who should bring the names of the new appointments in a sealed cover and read it out in the meeting. If not, the heading member should read it out from a sealed cover.

It is not possible that the sealed cover with the VC was handed over to Jolly Jacob earlier so there is no legality to the appointments, a CPM member said.
