KOCHI: Typewriters may have become a passe. But the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT) authorities insist that all the 2,400 candidates appearing for the test for the post of lower division clerk at CIFT should bring typewriters along with them.
The test is scheduled to be held here on July 30 and 31. Although the government had issued an order saying that the typewriting speed test could be done using a computer, the CIFT authorities say that electronic typewriters or computers will not be allowed. The candidates will have to clear a written test, comprising questions on general knowledge, English language, numerical aptitude and clerical aptitude, before qualifying themselves for appearing for the typewriting test. "The candidates coming from the other parts of the country or the state will be in trouble as they have to bring typewriters along with them. I see this as an attempt to prevent more candidates from coming for the test and to push their candidates through," a candidate said.

"When such tests used to be held earlier, written tests were held first. And only those who qualified in those tests had to appear for the typewriting test," a former CIFT official said.

According to the CIFT authorities, they just went by the law. "According to the rules, the typewriting test is mandatory," CIFT director Srinivasa Gopal said.
