THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: If you are looking for free tips for disposing of household wastes, just call the Kerala Gazetted Officers’ Association (KGOA). With disposal of wastes emerging the single biggest issue in the city in the new year, the KGOA has set up a help desk to advise people on composting methods as a quick-fix method to get rid of household wastes. The public can contact the help desk on 0471-2320470 and 0471-2322869 between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. for free tips. ‘’The idea is quite simple and can be carried out at home. It is also cost-effective,’’ a KGOA official said. The basic requirement is a pot which should be filled with sand and salt. Kitchen waste can be deposited inside the pot which has to be kept closed. After a few weeks, some lime may be added. The resultant product can be used as manure. Instead of pots, thick pipes can also be used for the purpose. Mayor K Chandrika inaugurated the help desk at a meeting organised by the women’s wing of KGOA here on Tuesday for discussing the garbage crisis. KGOA officials pointed out that biodegradable wastes, especially kitchen waste, can be disposed of easily in this manner. It’s 16 days now since waste collection in the capital city came to a standstill following the closure of the Vilappilsala waste treatment plant. While the State Government has announced a regional waste treatment plant for the district, the location is yet to be finalised owing to public outcry.
