Meerut: Thousand of victims of the massive tragedy in Uttarakhand have returned home but the trauma and memories of their ordeal refuses to go away. There are several people who saw their family members and friends getting killed or dying in the flash floods and landslides in Uttarakhand before their eyes but could no nothing to save themselves.
The Sharma family from Meerut too was in Uttarakhand for the Char Dham yatra but lost its youngest son and daughter in the tragedy. The head of the family, Sunil Kumar Sharma, cannot forget the ordeal that saw him losing his son and daughter even though he tried his best to save them.
Sunil Kumar Sharma, his wife, three daughters and a son Shivank had left Gaurikund in June 15 for Kedarnath. They prayed at Kedarnath temple on the morning of June 15.
As they were returning from Kendarnath on June 16, it started to rain heavily when they reached Bhairav Chatti near Gaurikund. To escape heavy rains and landslides they took refuge near a spring. But the entire family was drenched due to heavy rains with elder daughter Anuradha and Shivank catching cold and high fever. Both of them soon died near the spring where they were taking shelter.
But the bigger tragedy was that the other family members were forced to leave the two bodies and move on to save themselves. An inconsolable Sharma still remembers the ordeal and screams that he failed to save his children.
According to Sharma's other daughter Monica the situation was so bad that they too had given up the hope of surviving. "Suddenly the army personnel arrived and saved our family," she said.
