CHENNAI: This Deepavali might have been a dampener for firecracker enthusiasts, but tipplers made the best of the weather. As per sales figures available, the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) clocked a high of Rs 102.15 crore worth of sales on Wednesday alone.Sources in the TASMAC said that sales for Tuesday and Wednesday put together went beyond Rs 160 crore—much higher than last year’s figure of Rs 120 crore during the corresponding period. The city alone registered sales worth Rs 19.18 crore on Wednesday, an all time high. TASMAC sources said that the corporation sold a total of 2.3 lakh IMFL (India Made Foreign Liquor) bottles Statewide. Besides, 1.76 lakh beer bottles were also sold. “We thought the sales will dip due to the rains. But, after the rains relented towards the afternoon, the sales went through the roof,” said a source in TASMAC. “The overcast conditions could have aided in the sales as people would have consumed more than their usual capacity,” he added. The demand was so high that 40 shops in Tiruvallur district had to close towards the evening as they ran out of stock. These shops, besides 86 others in Tiruvallur, received supplies from the Thirumazhisai depot.Year on year, TASMAC staff said that they have noticed an increase in sales by 17.6 per cent. There has also been a corresponding increase of 12 to 13 percent consumers every year. Besides, around three to five per cent tipplers would have increased their consumption every year.
