Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Chemistry: 'There's No Jibber-Jabber'
In a recent virtual press-conference, actors Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, talked about their show The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and what makes their on-screen chemistry so great.

When actors Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie were first paired together for press events to promote their 2014 film Captain America: The Winter Soldiers, Marvel Cinematic Universe fans noticed the camaraderie between the two. Sebastian and Anthony often expressed their desire to work together in a project created on the lines of a buddy-cop film. Cut to 2021, the duo is all set to star in their own show The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, TFATWS promises to bring the unlikely duo of Sam and Bucky together, after they have lost their common link, Captain America or Steve Rogers (Chris Evans). The show will also delve deep into the back-stories of these characters, giving them a new dimension which wasn’t always possible in the crowded ensemble of MCU Movies.

During a virtual press conference for the show, creator Malcolm Spellman said that The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will remind fans of iconic buddy-cop films. “You can go from as gritty as 48 Hours to as comedic as Rush Hour, but in between there is that first Lethal Weapon and that first Bad Boys,” he said.

Anthony Mackie, who plays Sam Wilson aka Falcon in the show, addressed why his and Sebastian Stan’s real-life camaraderie is perfect for a show like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. “I think the great thing about it, or what I enjoy so much, you can’t find two people, further opposite than each other than Sebastian and I. But there is a mutual respect, understanding, appreciation of that person. We listen, learn, and teach each other a great deal. I would say we are ‘friends,’ which isn’t a term that either of us use lightly. So, I think because of that, as Mr. T (American actor) would say ‘there’s no jibber-jabber.’ We allow ourselves to be our best selves and we correct ourselves when we’re not our best selves.

“You always look for that other person, you know, that second hand. I am not trying to speak for Sebastian. I would never do that, even though I do that all the time. But that is kind of our relationship. We allow ourselves to be ourselves,” he said.

Sebastian Stan plays James Buchanan (Bucky) Barnes or the Winter Soldier, Steve Roger’s childhood friend who gets brainwashed and trained by the Nazi organisation Hydra to become a weapon. However, during the events of Captain America: Civil War (2016), he becomes Captain America’s friend and ally again. In TFATWS, Bucky will navigate life without Steve and bear the weight of his past as a Hydra assassin.

When asked what it is like to play a new version of Bucky, Sebastian said, “I was pretty freaked out because we had established a character a certain way, and there were certain things about him that I knew and I was very comfortable and familiar with tonally in the movies. The character that we’ve been introduced to for all these movies and then also where is he now. I think that was scary and exciting.”

With the massive success of WandaVision and the positive first reviews of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, fans are excited to know if Marvel is planning a second season to these shows. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige said, “It is a funny question and one that we get asked more in television, because people expect it to be like what they know before. So, they ask, ‘Where is season 2?’ We really did approach it like we do the movies. Which is, we better make this great or we won’t be able to do another one. If we were able to do another one, there are certainly ideas. The slight difference, of course, and it is becoming clear with Wandavision that they really will go back and forth between Disney Plus series and the Marvel Studios Features. So, where characters show up, and how — sometimes it will be in a direct season two, sometimes in a feature — and then into an additional season. We are just not going to say who does what right this second.”

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premieres on Disney+ Hostar on March 19, 2021. Directed by Kari Skogland, the show also stars Emily Vancamp, Wyatt Russel and Daniel Bruhl in pivotal roles.
