Kirsten Dunst Says Kissing Tobey Maguire Upside Down In Spider-Man Was 'Miserable'
Kirsten Dunst recalled how Tobey Maguire struggled to breathe during the kissing scene.

The OG Spider-Man trilogy still holds a special place in the hearts of Marvel fans. Tobey Maguire’s portrayal of the titular character, alongside his chemistry with Kirsten Dunst’s MJ and Willem Dafoe as the Green Goblin, are just a few reasons why this classic superhero movie continues to be loved. However, one scene that stands out from the aforementioned things is the iconic upside-down kiss between Maguire’s Peter Parker and Dunst’s MJ. Even though numerous Spider-Man films have been released, the lip-lock moment remains unforgettable and irreplaceable.

Over the years, both Maguire and Dunst have revisited the scene in various interviews. Once more, Dunst openly admitted during a recent visit on The Jonathan Ross Show that filming the kissing sequence in the rain was really challenging since Maguire was having trouble breathing because rainwater was getting in his nose.

Speaking to the host, the actress said, “I remember Sam Raimi giving me a book of famous kisses to be inspired but also he really wanted to make it special even though it was kind of miserable actually doing it. It was pouring with rain, freezing, Tobey couldn’t breathe so it was almost like I was resuscitating him.”

Speaking about the same scene in a 2022 interview with Marie Claire, Kirsten Dunst explained, “I did not feel like it was a famous kiss. Water was getting up his nose because of the rain and then he couldn’t breathe in the Spider-Man suit, and it just felt very late at night. I didn’t think about it that way.”

She continued by saying that she realised how romantic and unique Sam intended this to be because of the way it was presented to her. She went on to explain that Sam even offered her a book of well-known kisses to make notes from. She claimed that because Tobey was hanging upside down, it rarely felt that way.

Kirsten Dunst played the character of Mary Jane Watson alongside Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy from 2002 to 2007. Their on-screen chemistry was loved by audiences. While Maguire reprised his role in Tom Holland’s 2021 film Spider-Man: No Way Home, Dunst’s character wasn’t mentioned in the movie.

Since Maguire’s appearance in the MCU, fans of the original trilogy have expressed their eagerness to see the reunion of the iconic duo, Dunst and Maguire, on the big screen once again.
