The world’s popular red carpet has been rolled out at the famed Los Angeles Dolby Theatre, beginning the countdown to the star-studded Oscars ceremony. While most of us have been wondering if Leonardo DiCaprio will finally get his due this year, we are also a bit excited and confused about the film that will lead the best picture race. Will ‘Spotlight’, who has bagged best film honors from the the American Film Institute, the broadcast film critics, and the SAG Awards, among others? Will director, Alejandro González Iñrritu win again? Will he become the third director to win consecutive best director trophies -- and also the first in the last 65 years?
While there is still some time for the envelopes to be opened and the names to be announced. here's what you can expect in some time from now...
Chris Rock is back as Oscars host. As many would agree, he is the most popular and fine comedians to ever deal with racial issues, particularly with Bring the Pain - his iconic 1996 HBO stand-up special. He kicked off his career as a standup comedian in 1984. As soon as he met Eddie Murphy he bagged a role in ‘Beverly Hills Cop II’. In 1990, he was part of ‘Saturday Night Live’ team. Yes, we all are expecting multiple comments from the host on the fact that none of the black actors have been nominated for Oscars, this being the second year in a row.
The show will see the presence of several popular names giving away the awards. From JJ Abrams to Cate Blanchett,
Steve Carell, Emily Blunt, Sacha Baron Cohen, Lady Gaga, Dave Grohl, John Legend, Kerry Washington, Reese Witherspoon and many more. Since JK Simmons will honour the best supporting actress award, Patricia Arquette will present the award to best supporting actor, and Julianne Moore and Eddie Redmayne will hand out the award to the best actor awards.
To ensure there is some music, some dance, and lots of fun, about three of the five nominees will take to stage to perform their Oscar-nominated original songs. Lady Gaga will groove to ‘Til It Happens to You’, Sam Smith will sing Spectre’s “Writing’s on the Wall” and the Weeknd will perform ‘Earned It’.
So what are we all waiting for? Let’s get ready for the biggest awards night.
