The Hema committee report has created a massive stir in the Malayalam film industry. Since the report has been released by the Kerala government many celebrities have talked against some popular practices of the film industry. On the other hand, some celebrities have mentioned that they have faced several abuses and assaults while working in the film industry. In this regard, popular producer Santosh T Kuruvilla posted on his Facebook handle.
The director mentioned that he firmly believes that no woman has faced any kind of discrimination or exploitation while working on the films that he has produced. He mentioned that the industry which has produced so many successful films should not be tagged as bad in one day. He further added that the members of the industry should try to rectify the flaws while cherishing the good moments. He also requested the media officials to validate every information before putting it in front of the public.
“The Hema Committee Report and similar documents should be viewed as correctional records and immediate legislative action which is the first step toward addressing the issues highlighted in such reports,” his post read when translated to English.
Actor Prashanth Alexander also recently spoke on the Justice Hema committee report. He mentioned that a revolution is necessary for a change to happen in the film industry. He said that correcting the mistakes should not be a solution, rather it is important to create conditions where mistakes do not occur in the first place.
“We should not see correcting mistakes after they happen as a solution. Mistakes should not happen at all. Only then can we develop an environment that will provide people with the courage to speak out? When a woman experiences a traumatic incident, her fear affects her mental health,” he said.
Amid this controversy, actress Vincy Aloshious spoke about the exploitation she faced in the Malayalam film industry. She mentioned that while she has not personally experienced sexual harassment, she has been cheated out of promised payments in several films. The actress noted that those who speak out against such exploitation often become the subject of gossip and are sidelined by the industry’s top minds.
“When I questioned, I was told that this is how it works in the film industry. There is a tendency to sideline those who speak out against the wrong practices,” she added.
