Rajesh Khanna, popularly called Kaka by his fans, was the first superstar of the Hindi film industry. He has left behind an epic legacy of films and songs that still resonate with his fans. It is also said that Kaka was very generous by nature and always helped the people in dire times. Rajesh Khanna had once helped his house help as well.
Bhupesh Raseen, Rajesh Khanna’s best friend, once recounted this incident in an interview with an entertainment portal. Bhupesh said that the sister of Kaka’s domestic help had to go through a bypass surgery. When Kaka came to know about this, he paid the entire cost of the operation.
“Kaka didn’t stop at this. The doctors had said that the domestic help’s sister could not work for three months after the surgery. The Anand actor wondered how she be able to survive without any work,” Bhupesh added. He recalled that the actor called him up at late night and purchased 6 months of ration from a nearby general store. Bhupesh remembered asking him whether this work could be done in the morning. Rajesh Khanna said, “No, it has to be done now, not in the morning.” They then reached the domestic help’s home located in a slum near Lodhi colony via Bhupesh’s car and delivered the ration.
Bhupesh has talked about several other aspects of Kaka’s life in another interview as well. He gave this interview on the 11th death anniversary of Rajesh Khanna on July 18, 2023. He was asked about the actor’s state of mind while being diagnosed with cancer. Bhupesh had said, “For a few days, he would get emotional and say ‘bahut jaldi ho raha hai sabkuch’- but then he overcame it. Believe it or not, thereafter, he started living life as his character Anand Sehgal did in Anand. He would jokingly ask his doctor, Dr Jagannath, when his visa was going to expire.”
Rajesh Khanna died on July 18, 2012, at the age of 69. He last played the role of Godfather Don Saheb in the film Riyasat directed by Ashok Tyagi. This film was a flop at the box office.
