Virat Kohli Surpasses Sachin Tendulkar's Massive Record With Most 1000 Runs in Calendar Years in ODIs
Virat Kohli surpassed Sachin Tendulkar by slamming more than 1000 runs in ODI cricket in 8 calendar years, against Sri Lanka during World Cup 2023 clash.

Virat Kohli has surpassed yet another record of Sachin Tendulkar, that too at the home ground of the Master Blaster, during the ODI World Cup 2023 clash in Mumbai on Thursday. India squared off against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium, as Kohli went past Tendulkar’s record with the most calendar years (8) having scored more than 1000 runs in ODI cricket.

On Wednesday, a statue of Tendulkar was unveiled at the Wankhede Stadium, which etched the 50-year-old’s name in the history books and made him an immortal figure. Kohli had the chance to equal Sachin’s stellar record of ODI centuries in front of the legend himself, who was present for the India vs Sri Lanka clash.

While Tendulkar recorded 49 centuries in ODI cricket, Kohli already has 48 hundreds in the format. Before levelling Sachin’s tally of tons, Virat surpassed the Master Blasters’ record for most calendar years with more than 1000 runs scored in ODIs.

During his 24-year star-studded career, Tendulkar had scored more than 1000 runs in ODIs in seven calendar years, but Virat went past the four-figure mark for 2023 on November 2, and it was the 8th time, he had achieved the massive feat, one more than the great man himself.

The 34-year-old slammed his 70th ODI half-century as India recovered from a shaky start having lost skipper Rohit Sharma early.

Sri Lankan stand-in captain Kusal Mendis had won the toss and elected to bowl first, after which Rohit was dismissed on the second ball of the innings itself, having smashed a boundary on the first ball.

It was a characteristic start to the innings from the Hitman but after he departed, Virat Kohli joined Shubman Gill and the duo stitched together a century stand to bring India back on the front foot.

Gill also smashed his fifty in World Cup 2023 as the Indian batters looked to build towards a big total having been invited to bat first under the scorching sun of Mumbai.
