New Delhi: Punjab Congress expelled 16 rebel candidates, including five former legislators, from the primary membership of the party for contesting against official nominees.

"The 16 partymen defied the party discipline and preferred to contest the ensuing polls against official nominees. They are expelled from the primary membership of the party for a period of six years. No notice is issued to these partymen," Punjab Congress Disciplinary Action Committee (DAC) President Gopal Krishan Chatrath said in Chandigardh.

This decision was taken at the instance of Punjab Congress chief Shamsher Singh Dullo, Chatrath explained.

He said the presidents of District Congress Committees had been directed to submit report to the DAC on a day-to-day basis on Congressmen indulging in anti-party activities.

Chatrath informed there were around two-three Congressmen in each constituency working against party's official nominees. "These people are issued notices and their replies are sought on their indulgence in anti-party activities," he added.

The 5 former legislators expelled include Ramesh Singla (Nabha), Manjit Singh Jalbhutti (Mansa), Babu Ram Chawla (Balluana), Gulzar Singh (Nathana) and Baldev Singh Balamgarh (Malout).

On Tuesday, the party had expelled eight rebels, including former MLA Bhag Singh (Chamkaur Sahib).

The total number of partymen expelled from the Congress since the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers on January 29 stood at 24.
