The MLAs elected to the newly formed Andhra Pradesh assembly on average represent 46 per cent of the total electorate in their respective seats, up from 41 per cent in 2019, a new report from the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Andhra Pradesh Election Watch shows.
Representativeness is the percentage of representation which is calculated by dividing the votes polled for the winner by the electorate i.e. the total number of registered voters. This value represents the percentage of votes won by the winning candidate among the total number of registered voters in the constituency.
As per the report, Mangalagiri MLA Nara Lokesh, the son of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) head and Andhra Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, had the highest representativeness at 58.53 per cent, while two of the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) MLAs scored the least. Matsyarasa Visweswara Raju, MLA from Paderu, scored 27.82 per cent while Regam Matyalingam from Araku Valley had 27.19 per cent representativeness.
“All the winners of the Andhra Pradesh State Assembly Elections, 2024, won with an average of 46.15 per cent of the total registered voters. This implies that the winners represent on an average 46.15 per cent of the total electorate. In the Andhra Pradesh State Assembly Elections, 2019, winners won by an average of 40.48 per cent of the total registered votes,” the report said.
As per the report, a total of 154 (88 per cent) winners won with 50 per cent and above of the total votes polled in their constituency, while 21 (12 per cent) winners won with less than 50 per cent of the total votes polled.
Visakhapatnam South MLA Vamsi Krishna Srinivas from the Janasena Party won the polls with 70 per cent of the vote share, highest among all, while Matyalingam from Araku Valley won with about 43 per cent vote share, lowest among all the MLAs.
TDP, the party that formed the government in the state, got most votes — 45.60 per cent — with YSRCP, which won the 2019 polls in the state, at second spot with 39.37 per cent votes.
“Of 135 winners of TDP, 13 (10 per cent) won with less than 50 per cent of total votes polled in their constituencies. One (12.5 per cent) out of eight winners from BJP, six (55 per cent) out of 11 winners from YSRCP and one (5 per cent) out of 21 winners from Janasena Party have won with less than 50 per cent of total votes polled in their constituency,” it said.
Madakasira MLA MS Raju from the TDP was the elected representative with the lowest victory margin of just 351 votes while Srinivas scored highest 64,594 victory margin, the report shows.
The state had simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly polls in May and the counting of the votes was done on June 4.
