Ghulam Nabi Azad called for a consensus decision by parties on the reduction and redeployment of security forces.

New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on Tuesday called for a consensus decision by the state's political parties on the reduction and redeployment of security forces, according to news agency PTI.

The regional, national and international ramifications of any troop withdrawal can also not be overlooked, the Chief Minister asserted in an interview to PTI.

Asserting that the safety of people cannot be endangered, Azad added that all political parties in the state had to be “taken on board” regarding the issue.

“My first and last responsibility as the Chief Minister of the state is to protect the life and property of every man, woman and child without any political consideration. I will also have to take all the political parties on board on this matter,” Azad said.

Meanwhile, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi stepped in to play the peacemaker on Monday.

She met Mufti to iron out differences that the Congress has with his party over the demand for demilitarisation.

The move seemed to have paid off as after the meeting, which was attended by Defence Minister A K Antony and Congress troubleshooter Ahmed Patel, Mufti appeared positive.

“PM will announce about the committee,” said Mufti.

In all likelihood, an eight-member committee headed by National Security Advisor M K Narayanan will look into troop reduction and redeployment.
