New Delhi In a state that has seen multiple defections over the past 10-15 years, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday decided to crack the whip on party MLAs with swaying political loyalties.
The party is seeking the disqualification of 10 of its legislators who cross voted in favour of the Mulayam Singh Yadav government during the floor test — in which he mustered the support of 223 MLAs in the 402-member Assembly — on January 25.
The move comes three days after the Supreme Court disqualified 13 MLAs of the Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) for breaking away from the party and merging with the Samajwadi Party in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly.
While announcing the decision, BJP Vice President Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said that the party had asked Leader of the Opposition in UP Assembly Lalji Tandon to meet the Assembly Speaker and seek the disqualifiction of these ten members.
The legislators whose names have been proposed for disqualification are Shivendra Singh, Mahendra Singh Yadav, Shobaran Singh, Chhote Lal Verma, Ravindra Pundir, Sandeep Agarwal, Shyam Aherwal, Amarjit Singh, Chandramani Kant Singh and Rajiv Pratap Singh.
