New Delhi: In his first address to the AICC as party General Secretary, Rahul Gandhi on Saturday stressed the need to revamp the party oragnisation ahead of possible general elections in the next 12 months.
Rahul also reached out to the younger cadre of the Congress, saying the party needs to ensure the progress of youth in the party organisation.
“We must build a meritocratic organisation and the progress of the youth in the organisation must be linked with their performance, “ he said.
In his short speech that was lustily cheered by the gathering of Congress members that included Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Union ministers, CMs and party leaders from various parts of the country, Rahul said wherever he went in his recent tours, he was asked two questions by the youth and members of the NSUI and the Youth Congress.
"The non-party youth wanted to know how they could join politics and serve the country, while the party youth asked him how do we progress in our organisation."
"These two questions touch at the heart of what needs to be changed," he said.
Answering the questions himself, Rahul said, "If we are to truly become an organisation that represents the youth of our country, if we are to truly develop leaders of whom this nation can be proud, we need to do two things: The first is to build an organisation that is open and relevant to a broad range of Indians who believe in our values and seek to serve the nation."

"The second is to build a meritocratic organisation. Young people bring tremendous passion and energy into our organisation. We must see to it that they are accountable. It
is our duty to ensure that their progress is linked to their
performance," he said.

Taking the centrestage as AICC General Secretary, Rahul Gandhi unfolded his political agenda declaring that linking the poor and the backward sections with the domestic and international economic system was the biggest challenge for his generation.
''The common people are the biggest asset of the country. They want a change in the system to build a new resurgent India,'' PTI quoted Rahul as saying.
Emphasising the need to give the youth a pivotal role in the party set up, he said the GenNext had the greatest stake in the country's future.
''The leaders of tomorrow will rise from the ranks of the youth and asserted that the Youth Congress and the NSUI should become the vehicles for young Indians having a zeal to serve the country.''
Observing that the young people bring tremendous energy and passion into the organisation, he said their progress should be linked to their performance.
Reading out from a prepared text, both in English and Hindi, the scion of the Nehru-Gandhi family, identified the aam admi as the greatest asset of the country and called for creating opportunities for them in a resurgent India.
In an eight-minute speech, marked with sincerity of purpose, he said the true realisation of India's power lay in igniting the fire of ambition of the country's aspiring millions. ''In order for this flame to spread, India needs to be connected within itself and the rest of the world.''
He said, "India needs to be connected physically through roads, electricity, telecommunication, railways and other infrastructure. ''We also need to connect India intellectually through literacy, education and training. Finally, we need to connect India economically through the creation of jobs and livelihood.''
