New Delhi: As the Capital gears up for municipal polls, campaigning has started in full swing.
Among the first to set the campaign rolling was BJP leader Sushma Swaraj who chose city’s women as the target audience for her public speech.
Swaraj said all major problems facing Delhi, including inflation and lack of security, affected the fairer sex most. "Rising prices have left the budget of all households unbalanced. The Chief Minister despite being a woman herself has not done much," the former Delhi chief minister was quoted as saying by agencies.
Quite predictably, her focus remained Delhi’s dubious distinction of being the country’s rape capital. “The courts have termed Delhi as the haven for rapists. Here girls are being raped in schools, hospitals, buses, bus shelters and even on roads in broad daylight," she said.
Such was the focus of her women-centric campaign that Swaraj linked the now-stop-now-go demolition drive to women woes. “They are ones who have to run a household and if the income of their husband stops then they have to suffer.”
However, despite the heavy-duty discourse and the promises, the BJP leader indicated she was not in the race for Capital’s chief ministership.
“I have moved to Central politics, we have many capable leaders in Delhi who can take care of the chief ministership," she said.
