Mumbai: Shiv Sena will kickstart its electoral campaign ahead of Maharashtra Assembly elections as it is expected to hold a big rally expected in Mumbai on Saturday. Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray will preside over the rally.
This is Sena's first political event after the split with its 25-year-old ally BJP.
Sources said that Uddhav Thackeray called up his estranged cousin Raj Thackeray of Maharashtra Navnirman Seva to enquire about his health. Sources in the Sena, however, insisted that the call was personal and the cousins did not discuss any plans for alliance.
Sena had even lashed out at the BJP, calling it "enemy of Maharashtra", and signalled a return to its original pro-Marathi agenda for polls.
"Our other (Mahayuti) alliance parties wanted the Sena-BJP association to continue. More than that, it was what the 11 crore people of Maharashtra wanted. Those who trampled these sentiments are enemies of Maharashtra," Shiv Sena said in an editorial in party mouthpiece 'Saamana'.
"This (breaking of alliance) is an insult to the 105 Marathi martyrs of the Samyukta Maharashtra movement," the editorial went on to say.
It also termed as "unfortunate" the demise of the long-standing alliance between the two ideologically compatible pro-Hindutva parties.
The voting will be held on October 15 and the counting of votes is on October 19.
