New Delhi: The Supreme Court will on Monday hear a contempt petition against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her comments against the judiciary more than a month ago when she had claimed that the judgments of the judiciary can be bought.
Mamata had made the comments in the state Assembly and said that she was ready to go to jail for the same.
"At times favourable verdicts are given in return for money. These days, judgements are purchased. There is corruption among a section of the judiciary. I know there can be a defamation suit against me for saying this. But this must be said and I am ready to go to jail for saying so," she said.
She made the remarks after the state's human rights commission, which is headed by a former Supreme Court judge, ordered her to pay Rs 50,000 each to a professor of the Jadavpur University and his friend after they were arrested in April this year over some cartoons of the chief minister they reportedly circulated through their official email.
Without naming Justice Ashok Ganguly, Mamata said in the Assembly, "We got a very good person... He is not associated with my party or any party... but what happened ? Oh my god! He has no idea! He is writing (orders) as if he is the Supreme Court Chief Justice! Or the President of India. He doesn't know what is his jurisdiction, his authority."
