New Delhi A private member's resolution which asked for the repeal of an unpopular security law in Manipur has been defeated in the state Assembly.
The Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) 1958 gives sweeping powers of arrest and detention to security forces. Former chief minister and NCP MLA Radhabinod Koijam and R K Anand and I Ibohanbi of the Manipur People's Party moved a resolution on Tuesday urging the Centre to scrap the law.
PTI reports that the three opposition members showed copies of the report prepared by B Jeevan Reddy committee, which the Centre had set up to review AFSPA. Koijam claimed authorities to suppress protests were using the AFSPA.
Koijam alleged the state government was not about getting the Act repealed and said the insurgency problem could be solved only through dialogue
Repplying to the debate, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh said the Congress-led Secular Progressive Front (SPF) ministry did not want to prolong the AFSPA in Manipur but was forced to enforce it because of the security situation. The Bill was defeated by a voice vote last evening.
