New Delhi: Driving in the middle of market, in traffic and narrow lanes with people crowding around his vehicle and trying to meet the Bharatiya Janata Party leaders on it, the ever-smiling Dr Akhilesh Sharma was at the steering wheel for well over four hours during chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi roadshow in Krishna Nagar constituency on Thursday.
The roadshow began around 2 PM from Arjun Nagar across Krishna Nagar constituency in an open jeep and ended around 800 metres before the destined place due to lack of time. Bedi along with MPs Dr Harsh Vardhan, Maheish Girri and Om Birla took out the roadshow before campaigning for the 70-member Delhi Assembly came to an end at 6 pm on Thursday.
A well known Ayurvedic doctor, Sharma is associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh since childhood. He says, "My father is committed to RSS. He is an advocate in the Ram Janambhoomi- Babri Masjid case and is a former diplomat. I was five-year-old when I used to go for Jan Sangh shakhas and I am a strong follower of its ideology. My great grandfather Dr Hedgewar was also with RSS and used to run shakha in Lahore."
Driving at a snail's pace throughout the roadshow to ensure Bedi and other leaders are able to connect better with voters, the smile on his face never disappeared. He also admits that he is keen on contesting elections. "I would want to contest MLA elections and from Krishna Nagar constituency. Like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, I would want to start an Ayurvedic ministry in the state."
It's not the first time that he has driven his jeep for a candidate. "I have been driving vehicle since Dr Harsh Vardhan contested his first election in 1993. I drove a car during Kiran Bedi's nomination as well," he says.
According to him BJP MPs Meenakshi Lekhi, Maheish Girri, Navjot Singh Sidhu and Manoj Tiwary are some of the leaders who sat in his car. "Whoever sat in this car always won the elections and Kiran Bedi will also win from this seat," he adds.
The seat has always been won by Dr Harsh Vardhan since 1993 and in last polls he won by over 43,000 votes. "Kiran Bedi will also win the election even if it is not by such a huge margin. Dr Vardhan has been with the BJP and in politics for over 15 years and she come into the politics just 15 days ago, so there will be a difference," he says.
He also claims to have treated Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, Dilip Kumar, Shatrughan Sinha.
