'Men With 2 Wives Will Get Rs 2 Lakh': Congress Leader's Bizarre Promise Sparks Row; BJP Calls It 'Cheap Thinking'
Kantilal Bhuria, while discussing the party's Mahalaxmi scheme on Thursday, said that men with two wives would receive financial aid of Rs 2 lakh if the party is elected to power

Congress leader Kantilal Bhuria, while discussing the party’s Mahalaxmi scheme on Thursday, said that men with two wives would receive financial aid of Rs 2 lakh if the party is elected to power.

Bhuria, Congress Lok Sabha candidate from Madhya Pradesh’s Ratlam constituency, made the statement during an election campaign in the state.

“After the Congress government comes to power, Rs 1 lakh will be credited in the account of every woman, which is promised in our manifesto. Those who have two wives will be getting Rs 2 lakh,” the Congress leader told the crowd.

Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh and the party’s state unit chief Jitu Patwari were also present at the gathering when Bhuria made the controversial comments, India Today reported.

As outlined in its manifesto, under the Mahalaxmi scheme, the Congress will provide Rs. 1 lakh per year to every poor Indian family as an unconditional cash transfer. The amount will be directly deposited into the bank account of the eldest woman in the household. In the event of her absence, it will be transferred to the account of the eldest family member.

In a scathing response to Bhuria’s statement, BJP spokesperson Narendra Saluja called upon the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take action on the matter.

Taking to social media platform X, the BJP leader wrote, “What an objectionable comment made by Congress’s Ratlam candidate Kantilal Bhuria about the leader of the country, who represents 140 crore people… Such is the cheap thinking of Congress… Sometimes juice, sometimes syrup, two weddings today, naked…? This is their terminology…”

Bhuria, contesting on the Congress ticket, will face BJP’s Anita Chauhan, the wife of Madhya Pradesh’s Forest Minister Nagar Singh Chauhan, in the upcoming election in Ratlam on May 13.

Lok Sabha polls in Madhya Pradesh are being conducted in four phases. The first phase of polling concluded on April 19, followed by the second phase on April 26, and the third phase on May 7. The final phase for the state is set for May 13, covering eight constituencies. Vote counting will take place on June 4.
