New Delhi: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi will deny to the Election Commission that he gave a speech in which he supported the murder of Sohrabuddin Sheikh in a fake encounter, CNN-IBN has learnt.
Modi, who has been asked to explain his speech of Tuesday, will tell the commission he did not talk about fake encounters and accuse it of being biased.
Sources tell CNN-IBN Modi, in his reply, will ask the commission why it has not taken action against Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh for defaming him.
The BJP has decided to go on the offensive with senior party leaders L K Advani and Arun Jaitley faulting the commission for ignoring their complaints against the Congress.
Leader of Opposition Advani on Friday accused Sonia of provoking the BJP by calling Modi a "merchant of death" and "dishonest".
"I would like to know whether Gandhi has been issued any notice so far. The Election Commission should not have double standards and should adopt a uniform approach in both the cases," he said at press conference in Delhi.
BJP general secretary Jaitley showed the media a letter he had sent to the commission. The letter says the commission had issued a notice to Modi for speech, but it was yet to act on its "substantive complaints" against Sonia and though they had been filed on December 2 and 4.
"When the Election Commission releases a notice against Modi to the national media and does not act on a substantive complaint against Sonia Gandhi and Digvijay Singh, it amounts to an unfair interference in the free and fair conduct of the poll,” says the BJP letter.
Modi, while speaking at a rally in Mangrol town of Surat district, allegedly said Sohrabuddin deserved to be killed. Sohrabuddin, an alleged criminal, was gunned down and then framed as a terrorist in Ahmedabad last year.
