Kozhikode: Months after disowning K Karunakaran as his political leader for returning to the Congress fold, son K Muraleedharan on Friday announced that he would not regard the veteran politician as his father.
"Karunakaran ditched us all when, without consulting anyone, he announced that he is returning to the Congress. He has done this to get some posts in the Congress. That party will not benefit with his re-entry and neither would our Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) lose," Muraleedharan said.
"I now disown him as my father too," he thundered, hours ahead of a rally Karunakaran organised in Kochi to formally welcome his supporters back to the Congress.
Karunakaran, 87, walked out of the Congress in 2005 and formed the Democratic Indira Congress-Karunakaran. One year later, he found the going tough and merged his party with the NCP for political survival.
When this gamble too failed to pay off, he announced Dec 10 that he was wrong in leaving the Congress. Soon after, Muraleedharan announced that he had disowned Karunakaran as his political leader.
Karunakaran had to wait for another 20 days to meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi to get her nod to return to the party.
