Soren challenges his conviction in HC
Delhi HC admits Shibu Soren's plea challenging his conviction in the murder of his private secretary Shashi Nath Jha.

New Delhi: Former Union Minister and JMM leader Shibu Soren on Thursday moved an appeal in the Delhi High Court, challenging his conviction for the murder of his private secretary Shashi Nath Jha.

A Delhi court had on December 26, 2006 convicted Soren and four others for the abduction and murder of Jha. The court has sentenced Soren to life imprisonment for the crime.

Admitting the plea, a Division Bench of Justice Manmohan Sarin and Justice S L Bhayana of Delhi High Court on Thursday issued a notice to the CBI and asked the agency to file its reply by February 19. The court has also sought the records of the case from the trial court.

Soren, who has since been lodged in the Tihar Jail, has meanwhile moved a bail application in the high court and it is likely to be heard on the next date of hearing.

According to the prosecution, Jha went missing from Dhaula Kuan area of Delhi on May 22, 1992 and was last seen in Ranchi in the company of Soren's loyalists the next day. His body was exhumed from Piska village near Ranchi in 1998.

Jha was allegedly murdered as he had knowledge about the money allegedly received by JMM MPs, including Soren, from the then Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao to vote in favour of his minority government in Parliament in 1993, they said.
