New Delhi: "Winning Delhi is like winning India", a beaming Congress spokesperson Veerappa Moily said on Monday after the ruling party won assembly elections in the national capital for the third straight time. The Lok Sabha polls are slated before May next year.
Moily said the Congress went to the elections with a vision of governance and development.
“Victory of the Congress in Delhi under the leadership of Sheila Dikshit has demonstrated that it is the victory of those who have a vision of governance and development. Winning Delhi is like winning India,” Moily told reporters at a press conference.
The party has bagged 42 of 69 seats in Delhi.
Moily said that in Delhi and other states development and governance were the prominent issues for the party, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had tried to divert it but it didn't click.
“Governance had prominence in our agenda, while the BJP, under the leadership of L.K. Advani and Rajnath Singh, tried to divert the real issues to terrorism and national security, but this didn't click,” Moily said.
The Congress vowed to fight the evils of terrorism and communalism on a war footing.
“Terrorism and communalism have become a threat to the country and we will fight back both the evils,” he said.
Of the five states which went to the polls and results for which were declared on Monday, the Congress will form the government in Delhi, Rajasthan and Mizoram, while the BJP has retained the government in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
