10.1 inches is the dividing line for personal and professional user experiences. Professionals need the reliability and security of paid apps, while personal users are more interested in free.

New Delhi: In a bid to clearly demarcate 'personal' and 'professional' experience, Microsoft has announced that its Office suite will continue to be free on smaller screens measuring under 10.1 inches.

Kirk Koenigsbauer, the corporate vice president for the Office 365 Client Apps and Services team, said that 10.1 inches is the dividing line for the different user experiences. Professionals need the reliability and security of paid apps, while 'personal' users are more interested in free, PC world report noted.

The company is going to classify anything with a screen size of 10.1 inches or less as a true mobile device and offer core editing and viewing experiences for free until one gets the premium, subscription features like integration from one app to another, security, and reliability-all part of the Office 365 suite, and not the individual apps.

A Microsoft spokeswoman said that users will be able to create new documents, edit, and view them on the free versions of Office. The specific subscription benefits include the terabyte of OneDrive storage, 60 minutes of free worldwide Skype calls and more robust editing tools that come with the full Office 365 suite.

While this comes as a welcome move for small-screen devices, the decision would impact larger Surface and Surface Pro tablet lines which measure more than the dividing 10.1 inch rule by Microsoft.
