There has been a surge in the prices of garlic over the past few weeks in India. This is attributed to the unseasonal rainfall and the depleting soil quality in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. Amidst this crisis, a case from Ujjain, Kalaliya is dominating the headlines. As per a video uploaded by Ujjain_Mandi_Bhav, thieves targeted the garlic crop of a farmer.

The thieves stole four to five sacks of garlic. They stole the crop after they targeted a farmland at midnight. The farmer was guarding the field till 10:00 p.m. and had planned to sell the crop in the market next week after its harvesting. The farmer was hopeful to earn a substantial sum after selling this crop.

Not only in Madhya Pradesh, a similar case has been reported from Ahmedabad as well where thieves stole 14 sacks of garlic from an Agriculture Produce and Market Committee. This APMC is located near the Vishala Circle. The sacks weighed 140 kg worth Rs 35,000 in the wholesale market.

Govind Savansa, 39 has filed a police complaint in this regard. His FIR with the Vejalpur Police said that he had been running a business of wholesale selling of onion and garlic. At around 9 am on February 3, Govind brought 105 sacks of garlic containing 10 kg of garlic from Madhya Pradesh. Govind was supposed to take the garlic sacks to the Jamalpur market at 08:00 p.m. When his staffers were loading the sacks in the rickshaw, he found 14 bags missing.

Govind stated in the FIR that he tried finding the garlic bags around his shop in the APMC. He, however, was not able to find them. Later, he checked the CCTV footage and found that two men had stolen those sacks at around 06:30 p.m. on February 3.

As per a report published in the Livemint, there are very less chances for a reduction in the garlic prices in any immediate time. “Rates are likely to come down from current levels in January but garlic prices could remain elevated till March,” Prakash Tomar a trader in Madhya Pradesh told Hindustan Times.
