Ever since the Taliban assumed control of Afghanistan in 2021, the country has seen food shortages, orphaned children and executions. Given the worsening humanitarian situation, doubts persist regarding the safety of outsiders willing to visit Afghanistan. Despite this, an American travel vlogger named Eli Snyder recently travelled to the country and documented his journey on Instagram.
While the vlogger seemed quite comfortable and unbothered with his surroundings, his videos sparked mixed reactions on social media. In a series of posts and videos, Eli Snyder shared his time in the Taliban-controlled areas of Afghanistan. In episode 6 of his stay in Afghanistan, the man began by visiting the Mazar-i-Sharif, for which he hired a private tax driver. He further revealed how the driver took him to a “Taliban House” along with a guard for company. While repeatedly mentioning that the people there behaved “nice,” he also highlighted how women and children live in “sombering” conditions.
Moving forward, Eli Snyder added glimpses from several places in Afghanistan. The clips also showed him relishing local delicacies.
However, users were left divided in the comments section. A person wrote, “Bro is just casually cracking jokes with the Taliban,” while another commented, “These are so interesting. How I feel for the women there.”
“Need a guard to accompany you wherever you go. Sounds like North Korea,” another user commented.
Another user took a dig at his video and wrote, “This is so incredibly TONE DEAF. “sombering experience seeing how women and children live” but look at me swing weeee.”
In earlier posts, he shared several pictures from the country, capturing scenes of armed Taliban members, bustling streets, local children and scenic landscapes.
“This was my most ambitious trip yet and a tremendous leap of faith in the reports of past travellers, dutiful planning, meticulous research & mostly the inherit goodness of human beings. My confidence mounted until a few days before the trip, when fear took its place as I was left alone with what I was about to do…In the end my deep worries were for naught; the Taliban & Afghan people alike treated me with profound love and respect from the moment I entered their country! No matter where I go I’m reminded that this world is kind and this world is mostly safe,” he wrote.
