An Indian-origin man from Punjab’s Ludhiana was shot dead in Canada on Friday, the Royal Canadian Police said. The victim has been identified as Yuvraj Goyal, who went to Surrey on a student visa.
28-year-old Yuvraj moved to Canada in 2019 on a student visa and recently obtained Canadian Permanent Resident (PR) status.
As per the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, the shooting occurred at around 8:30 a.m. in the 900 block of 164 Street in Surrey, British Columbia on Friday.
Police records suggest that Yuvraj had no criminal history and four suspects have been taken into custody for his killing. The motive behind his murder is yet not known and an investigation into the matter is underway.
The four suspects who were held have been identified as Manvir Basram (23), Sahib Basra (20), Harkirat Jhutty (23) from Surrey, and Keilon Francois (20) from Ontario. All of them have been charged with first-degree murder on Saturday.
“We are thankful for the hard work of the Surrey RCMP, Air 1, and Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team (IERT), but more work still needs to be done. Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) investigators remain dedicated to determining why Mr Goyal was the victim of this homicide,” a Canadian Police official said.
Yuvraj worked as a sales executive while his father, Rajesh Goyal, ran a firewood business and his mother, Shakun Goyal, was a homemaker.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police stated that the initial probe indicated the shooting was targeted, but the motive for Yuvraj’s murder is still under investigation.
