The Rock made an emphatic return to WWE’s Smackdown brand as he eyed Roman Reigns’ Universal Title. On February 2, the weekly WWE live event aired from the Legacy Arena at The BJCC in Birmingham, Alabama.

In the closing moments of the SmackDown event, Cody Rhodes mentioned that he wouldn’t be taking on Reigns at WrestleMania. Cody then talked about taking council before mentioning that he spoke to someone who knew Reigns very well. Next, the Rock’s music hit as he made his way into the WWE ring. During the final segment of the Smackdown episode, Cody Rhodes cut a promo in the presence of Reigns, his spokesman Paul Heyman and The Bloodline. He then asked Reigns if the duo could have a little more private conversation. This led to Reigns sending the Bloodline out of the ring. Further in the segment, Cody says that he didn’t agree with Seth Rollins calling out the Universal Championship to be the ‘Hollywood Title’. It was the same championship that was held by wrestling icon Bruno Sammartino and his father Dusty Rhodes.

However, the title was swiftly taken away from Dusty at the Madison Square Garden. Cody then makes it abundantly clear that he wanted the Universal Championship, regardless of what Rollins had to say about the title, just not at WrestleMania.

The Rock made a surprise return to the WWE on Monday Night RAW in San Diego last month. He wasted no time getting engaged in a verbal and physical battle with Jinder Mahal. His return sparked a lot of excitement amongst fans worldwide, paving the way for potential matches in the future. While addressing the crowd on that episode, The Rock told the WWE fans that he was quite hungry and was going to get something to eat. He then asked, “Should The Rock sit at the booth? Should the Rock sit at the bar? Or should The Rock sit at the head of the table?"

WWE has now released a digital exclusive on YouTube that showed what happened after SmackDown had gone off air on February 2. In the video, Reigns can be seen lifting the title in the Rock’s face before leaving the ring. He then said, “Well, it’s become very clear and evident to The Rock that when you want to create something iconic and when you want to create something magical, you come to the magic city".

He then thanked the Birmingham crowd for their presence also letting them know that they had made history.
