New Delhi: There's good news for the patients at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
Streaming music, water fountains, films on television sets - waiting for a doctor at the the country's prestigious healthcare institute is set to be less anxious and more relaxing for patients.
A few centers at the AIIMS have already taken steps to provide a cheerful and inviting ambience for the patients visiting OPD wards, who otherwise have to wait for long durations for their turn to be examined by the doctors.
A 'water curtain' has been installed near the OPD ward of the eye center at a place which was earlier used to store cleaning equipment while films on healthcare would soon be shown on television sets installed in waiting areas.
AIIMS spokesperson Shakti Kumar Gupta said the changes are being made at the institute keeping in mind the principle that exposure to pleasing surroundings has a positive healing effect on the patients.
The occasional wailing of ambulances would also soon be drowned by mellifluous notes of the sitar or the musical strains of santoor.
Music not only allows people to relax, but it also blocks out disconcerting sounds of announcements, people calling out or crying, Gupta said.
"Using music as a healing medium dates back to the ancient times with references even in biblical scriptures and historical writings of age-old civilizations of India, Egypt, China, Greece and Rome," Gupta said.
Similar methods were being implemented at the institute, he said adding the benefits of using music with patients who are depressed, anxious or dependent on drugs or alcohol are enormous.
The changes at the institute are being carried out keeping in mind the modern trends in planning and designing hospitals, he added.
There have been instances of people telling the hospital administration the listening to music had distracted them from worrying about the outcome as much as they might have otherwise.
