Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday offered Rs 1,00,000 in cash and a government job as reward to help catch terrorists behind a spate of grenade attacks in the region.
More than three-dozen civilians, including tourists, have been killed in over a 100 grenade blasts in Kashmir since January. Nearly 400 have been wounded.
"Police will provide Rs 1,00,000 and a government job to anyone who arrests a grenade thrower or provides information leading to an arrest," said a police advertisement published in the Greater Kashmir newspaper.
It said the identity of people giving the information will be kept secret. Grenades have been thrown in buses, at bus stations, busy intersections and in markets.
Many were aimed at security vehicles or police foot patrols but have missed their targets, exploding among civilians.
"I am sure people are fed up with these brutal attacks and will come forward (with information)," a security official, who did not want to be identified, said.
India's Home Secretary VK Duggal said last month Muslim terrorists fighting Indian rule in the region were hiring local criminals and "vagabonds" to throw grenades.
There are more than 5,00,000 people listed as unemployed in Jammu and Kashmir, and officials are hoping that the lure of a government job could help obtain information about terrorists from them.
