BHUBANESWAR: With a large number of seats lying vacant in Plus Two colleges, the Higher Education Department on Monday said admission would continue till September 3. Minister of State for Higher Education Badri Narayan Patra told mediapersons that nearly 80,000 seats are lying vacant even after spot admissions on Friday. In a circular to the principals of all junior colleges and higher secondary schools, the Higher Education Department has directed to allow admission of students in the balance seats by taking an undertaking from them to produce school leaving certificate (SLC) within seven days from the date of admission. The Minister said the Department would review the colleges having large number of vacancies and the poor response of students to these colleges. The Government will take note of the colleges which are not getting response from students for admission. If necessary, these colleges will be de-affiliated, he added. Coming out of the meeting, the principal of BJB Junior College said an expert committee would review the vacancies in the Plus Two colleges and submit a report to the Government. The State having 1,238 junior colleges has a combined strength of 3,07,766. There were online applications from over 3,53,800 candidates while 2,75,212 common application forms were submitted at the state resource centres. In the first selection, intimations were sent to 2,34,462 candidates whereas 2,12,244 students took admission. For the second selection, intimations have been sent to 22,791 students while 17,261 of them have already taken admission till date.
