Pope Benedict nominates 15 cardinals
Pope Benedict has nominated 15 cardinals for the first time since he took over the holy office.

Vatican City: Pope Benedict XVI has nominated cardinals for the first time since he took office.

These 15 new appointees will one day elect his successor.

They represent 11 countries, including Venezuela, the Philippines, South Korea and Spain. The Pope hopes that they will "reflect the universality of the church".

One of the nominees, Bishop Zen of Hong Kong is is an outspoken critic of China's human rights record.

Others include the long-time private secretary to Pope John Paul II and Sean O'Malley from Boston.

There are currently five Indian cardinals, but only three have voting rights.

The official ceremony is slated for March 24.
