Sundargarh roads bear the brunt

The incessant rains in the last few days have caused massive damage to the road infrastructure. Rainwater from hilly terrains has washed away culverts and roads at many places in Sundargarh district.

A key road in Nuagaon block connecting adjacent Jharkhand via Sorda and Luaram developed a wide breach near Kadamtola 11 days back. As a result, road communication on the route remained badly affected. A few days back, the district administration as a temporary arrangement used sand bags and stone packing to allow movement of small vehicles. Nuagaon block chairperson Sushila Topno said the Katepur weekly market which draws huge crowd could not be held for the last two weeks due to disruption of road communication.  Sorda Sarpanch Simon Kujur and his Chitapedi counterpart in the block, Hari Charan Xalxo, claimed many other village roads were also washed away in the heavy rains. Several villages, including Koilatoli and Girjatoli, have been cut off from the mainstream.

The Nuagaon block received around 485-mm  rain over the last fortnight. Reports  from the interior Balishankara block said a major portion of the Tumulia-Bhandarisankara road was washed away paralysing communication network.

Temporary repair work was completed on Tuesday to partially restore vehicular traffic on the important road connecting Kalunga with Gurundia block after rainwater of Chirobeda nullah resulted in collapse of the culvert at Rangamati area four days back.
